Today was an okay day. Most things went well, but a few things did not go so well.

First I woke up and took the Human Geo test. Actually first I woke up at like 4 and my throat was on fire so I forced myself to drink some water and go back sleep. Then I woke up again and unfortunately my throat was still on fire and I still hadn’t learned anything about humans or about geography. So as I went through my morning routine sans shower I learned some stuff.

Then I hurriedly grabbed my pencils and pen and pictures and book and Sogo’s bakery and ran out the door. Actually I probably walked. Anyways I took the test and it ended up being pretty hard. However free response was ridiculously easy and I am fairly confident I still did well overall.

Afterwards Bryan and I accompanied Zizi to N9 where she talked to Cohen about Smoke Signal stuff. It was funny because Tammy came to the door thinking that Zizi was taking her econ book back. Throughout the day I would learn that many people have been returning AP books to Zizi lately as if she is some sort of library. While she was talking Bryan and I were looking at the L1 tiles.

Then we went out to lunch. Unfortunately Zizi ditched us for Ishan and Kristina was too busy saying goodbye to Brandon to return our texts so we ditched her. We drove to Country Way, along the way managing to get a little bit lost. I am not so good at navigation (hence the Human Geography struggles). But Country Way was very delicious. In fact I still have some that I am looking forward to eating tomorrow morning.

After lunch we decided to ditch fourth period because we were excused anyways so we went to my house where I downloaded League. We also watched an episode of How I Met Your Mother. Bryan scrutinized my baby pictures.

Finally we returned to school. I gave the pictures back to Kelsey and we watched Forrest Gump in Evans which was awesome. Unfortunately it’s like people don’t know how to shut up during a good movie. In Geers we read some more Crucible. People try way too hard. This stuff was funny in seventh grade. Source: I did the funny accent stuff in seventh grade and it was funny. It’s not funny anymore. Just read the stupid play.

After school I came home and League was still patching. So I watched some How I Met Your Mother while waiting for it to finish. Then I played League for the first time in about eight months. The first game was bad, second game good, third game good, fourth game disastrous. It was fun times. I am glad to be back. It’s weird to admit this but everyone is like omg Ethalkynn is back which makes me feel good because usually people do not really care what I do or pay close attention. But when I reinstall League all my friends I used to play with are happy.

Then my Facebook status. So I had to dress really fast and I looked like a slob. My shirt and pants were both not ironed. It looked terrible. But I managed to make it to the Marriot just about twenty minutes late. Upon arrival I realized that people were just standing around looking at baskets! Man I would have had time to iron my clothes. The salad was terrible. The bread was also subpar. Fortunately the steak was good. Also the mashed potatoes were good. And the desert was delicious.

Following dinner I learned how to dance because Kristina forced me to so she taught me. Needless to say I am not a very good dancer. In fact I’m pretty terrible. But she was really patient and it was pretty fun. Now I’m feeling tired which is why this post is so drab and I need to go to sleep. Good night friends.

edit: had to add this, can’t believe I forgot about it

Before dinner started this guy at my table Sagar went around the room complimenting everybody. His were generally pretty superficial so I decided to try complimenting everybody as well. Unfortunately I didn’t know everybody that well, like Sagar and Austin whom I had just met, but I still tried to say something like nice eyes or your tie looks really nice with your shirt. With the others I knew them ranging from yeah we’ve talked like three times to you are super awesome and I like you I tried to give really heartfelt compliments and it felt super good. I highly recommend it. Like a lot of the times when I see people put in more effort into appearance or whatever it might be I try to take notice because it’s nice to see people smile. But I hardly ever say things like you are legitimately the nicest person ever or your bravery and dedication to what you enjoy seriously inspires me, those things are different. It’s deeper. It’s character. People like it. And afterwards a couple of the people at the table who I’m a little closer to said some nice things to me which made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. Like okay it sounds like a circlejerk but it wasn’t. I didn’t say all those things because I had to. I mean to me it originally started out as a campfire thing where you just go around and do stuff for fun but I started with Jocelyn and okay yeah she is seriously the nicest person ever. She genuinely cares about everybody and her sweet exterior is not fake. So I started saying that and I realized holy crap these people are all cool in their own way. So I just said it. And they felt good. It made people happy.

Everybody can just make people happy. It’s pretty awesome when you realize it.

edwardspoonhands:

Have you ever wondered about the way we become emotionally invested in people and animals and objects?

It’s like that one scene in Community’s pilot episode where Jeff Winger is confronted about why he’s in the study group and he makes up this beautifully bullshitted speech and in the speech he takes a pencil and names it Steve I think can’t really remember the name and breaks the pencil and everybody gasps.

Now clearly this is exaggerated because it is after all a television show but just think about how this applies to your own life. It’s easy to become emotionally invested in animals and even inanimate objects. When I was a kid I spent countless hours with my sister and our stuffed animals. If you put them in front of me I could probably still tell you the vast majority of their names, their lineage, their personalities, their fabricated life stories. They matter to me. Not just the concrete toys, but the role they played in my life.

Why is it so easy to become attached to things that have no meaning, no feelings? We watch a movie and the movie lasts 150 minutes and at the end we are crying over the main characters dying. Or take for instance the movie Up. [spoiler alert] Mr. Frederickson and Ellie. Why do we care about them so much? Only one of them is a main character. They don’t have any lines together. I cried when she had a miscarriage. I don’t know who she is. I don’t know who the baby is. But I cried nonetheless.

So it’s so easy to form emotional connections with characters in film, characters in novel, some random puppy we glanced at for five seconds on our dashboards and then scrolled past. But it’s so much harder to become emotionally invested in other people.

That requires some kind of commitment on my part. On two levels. Or really more than two levels, but two major levels: people you personally know and people you don’t really know at all. If I look at a picture of a cute cat on Tumblr, I can scroll past it without it hurting my conscience at all. But if I scroll past a picture of a starving kid or whatever, I can’t do the same. If I take the time to invest in it emotionally, then I have to ask myself the question, what am I doing about it? And the people around us. And forming meaningful connections with the people around us requires a much more substantial investment. It’s hard work.

I’ve always wondered about this. Why I can watch Clannad and my face will be Niagara Falls in miniature when the important stuff happens but I turn around and treat my parents like crap or I don’t value family or whatever. It’s a good question to ask.

tl;dr be kind to one another

First practice test 67/120

The jar was completely full when I started. Unfortunately the angle doesn’t give the best perspective of how many I ate but as you can see I have amassed a small graveyard of shells in the bowl to the left.

I should not have eaten so many pistachios.

Track is finally over!
